wiki birthday

I’ve noticed the wiki birthday meme going around blogland, and decided to wait til my birthday to actually post it.
What you do:
1) Go to Wikipedia
2) In the search box, type your birth month and day but not the year.
3) List three events that happened on your birthday
4) List two important birthdays and one death
5) One holiday or observance (if any)
6) Tag 5 other bloggers to complete

Three events:

  • 1794 - Maximilien Robespierre is guillotined in front of a cheering crowd, for sending thousands of others to a similar fate during the French Revolution.
  • 1866 - The Metric Act of 1866 becomes law and legalizes the standardization of weights and measures in the United States.
  • 1945 - A US Army B-25 bomber accidentally crashes into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building killing 14 injuring 26.
  • Two Birthdays:

  • 1866 - Beatrix Potter, English author (d. 1943)
  • 1929 - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, First Lady of the United States (d. 1994)
  • One death:

  • 1750 - Johann Sebastian Bach, German composer (b. 1685)
  • One holiday or observance:

  • Faroe Islands - Ólavsøka Eve
  • (of course, I picked the one that’s closest to knitting)

    Five tags:
by now, I figure most people that wanted to do this will have done it. that or they don’t generally do memes. so it seems pointless to make a list. if you haven’t done this yet, consider yourself tagged.

    how much are you worth?

it seems a lot of people lately have been taking the quiz on whether or not you could pass 8th grade science.

sour grapes, here, so I’ll show you the results of one of the other quizzes that site has to offer:
$4890.00The Cadaver Calculator - Find out how much your body is worth. From Mingle2 - Free Online Dating

    Mingle2 - Free Online Dating

really, I think this is much more important to know than whether or not I can pass 8th grade science 15 years later.
(for the record, I barely passed. but I did pass)

    Mitten Swap Answers

    Sin comentarios »

like so many others, I’ve joined the Knit Mitt Kit Swap. so, here’s my answers for that.

Are you allergic to any fibers?
    nope

    What are your favorite colors?
purples, blues, greens, neutrals. yellow & orange are acceptable as accent colors (like if it’s a multicolored yarn), but I don’t see myself making solid mittens from those colors.

Are you a new mitt knitter? How long have you been knitting mittens?
I made a pair of fingerless gloves shortly after I started knitting (about 2 years ago). Proper mittens I started knitting this past July. Haven’t tried gloves yet, but plan to soon.

Do you prefer solid or multicolored yarn?
depends on the stitch pattern I’ll be using - some look kinda meh with multicolored yarns. I like the subtle color variations like Malabrigo has

What fibers do you prefer in mitten yarn?
    anything natural and warm.

Where do you usually knit mittens?
at home, on the bus commute to work. sometimes in the car.

How do you usually carry/store small projects?
Yarn (and project) goes into a ziplock, that bag goes into the tote I take with me to work.

What are your favorite mitten patterns?
I’ve been using the pattern from Ann Budd’s Handy Book… didn’t like the way the tops came out, so I’m planning to modify it with a pattern from Family Circle Easy knitting from last year.

What are your favorite mitten knitting techniques?
    there’s various techniques?

What new techniques would you like to try?
still wanting to try fair isle/stranded color. also want to try knitting two at once (like the 2 socks/2 circs or magic loop).

What are your favorite needles for knitting mittens?
    bamboo dpns, I’d guess.

What are some of your favorite yarns?
alpaca, merino, cashmere. I felt some of that Buffalo Gold at the LYS - that felt quite nice too!

What yarn do you totally covet?
Cherry Tree Hill, Lorna’s, Socks that Rock, any handpainted, really. Malabrigo & Manos rank up there too.

Any pattern you would love to make if money and time were no object?
I don’t know - I haven’t scoured the mitten patterns to much yet. as long as it has something to keep my occupied (cables, fair isle, anything not plain), I’m happy.

Favorite kind of needles (brand, materials, straights or circs, etc)?
dpns or circs. I like short needles (I have some Addi & Brittany? short dpns that are great - I love short needles)

If you were a specific kind of yarn, which brand and kind of yarn would you be?
    no idea.

Do you have a favorite candy or mail-able snack?
Ferroro Rochez (sp?) - those hazlenut chocolates. mmmm. yum.

    What’s your favorite animal?
    lions/cats

Would you prefer super warm mittens or something more like fingerless mitts?
for myself, probably proper warm mittens (I am in Minnesota, afterall!)

If you were a color what color would you be?
not sure. if we go with ‘you are what you buy’, I’d be heading into the orangey brown spectrum.

What is your most inspiring image, flower, or object in nature?
I love thunderstorms, so I’d say lightning against a really dark sky.

    Do you have a wishlist?
yeah, somewhere on Amazon. not sure how up-to-date it is.

    first sock done

    SocktoberFest 2006

I did the toe decreases and kitchnered it (which looks much better than the previous pair. yay for practice and realizing I should pull the stitches tighter) on the bus this morning. so no pics yet. (hmm… the copier scans into jpgs. I wonder how big a file that’d be…) haven’t cast on for it’s mate yet. maybe tonight’s bus ride (if another pumpkin doesn’t put itself on the needles instead)

as a side note for others who might knit it: the Welt Fantastic stitch pattern (from Sensational Knit Socks) doesn’t stretch much. kind of like what I’ve heard about Jaywalkers (which would make sense, they are kind of similar).

here’s hoping my niece can get it on her foot!

    Here’s my thought’s to Lolly’s Socktoberfest questions:

When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative? or in a class?

I started making socks last October - a toe-up pair that’s still not finished. I took a class for it because the first time I tried toe-up on my own I failed miserably.

What would you have done differently?

Used a different yarn. I’m using Wild Foot in the red/black Geranium color, and it twists up on my constantly. It’s a pain in the arse.

What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?

I finished a pair of socks in Dale Baby Ull earlier this year, and I’m currently working on a pair in Emu DK Superwash. Both are quite nice to work with.

Do you like to crochet your socks? or knit them on DPNs, 2 circulars, or using the Magic Loop method?

I don’t crochet (yet). DPNs are my preferred sock method, though I’m planning to try 2 socks on 2 circs for dh’s pair, in an attempt to get them finished quicker.

Which kind of heel do you prefer? (flap? or short-row?)

I like both. We’ll see if I still like short-row after the second attempt on the first toe-up sock.

How many pairs have you made?

I’ve finished 1 pair (purple beaded socks for Lilin) and currently have 2 pairs on the needles (the red toe-ups and the rainbow socks for Amelia).
