somebody (we won’t name names here) left the door to the garage open this morning. wouldn’t be a problem, except the garage door was also open (since we leave close to the same time, it’s easier to just leave it open and the 2nd person closes it). so I’m gathing things and heading out, and notice that the door is open. not just unlatched, but open. which can only mean one thing.
so I go into the kitchen and attempt to summon Kashka by meowing. (it usually works.) no luck. so I head outside, walking slowly around the deck, all the while scanning the yard, hoping that she didn’t squished by the neighbor’s horses or a car. thankfully she wasn’t. she was crouching (the scared crouch, not the gonna pounce version) around the far side of the deck. she was rather cooperative and I was able to follow her to get her to run into the house. we have a little chat, I go to grab something, and realize that a) I didn’t close the door, and b) she was headed back in that direction (I thought I saw a blur head in that direction). so I throw my stuff in the car and head back outside to the same spot. this time she’s sitting on one of the decorative rocks (I’m not sure if she was thinking of jumping up onto the deck or just being cute). we go in and have a little chat and then I head to work.
I’m thinking I need to either dig out her harnass and leash (yes, I have taken her outside before. I think that’s why she was close to the house) or else find her one of those outdoor cat playground things (like this maybe?)

apparently the socks have recruited traffic (and/or maniacal bus drivers) to their revolution.
happily knitting away on the bus this morning, I was attempting to cruise through round 5, and if I was lucky, round 6 (which is the twisting row) so that I’d be at a good starting point for the next time I pick them up. (I’m about 8 rows from working the heel. I was really hopeful to get some good progress done this morning.)
so of course, I’m in the middle of the needles when the brakes hit. lord only knows why, traffic didn’t look that bad from where I was sitting. so I fling my hand out in an order to prevent my Yarnery tote full of stuff from flipping onto the floor (I did not want to hunt down all the loose things floating around in that bag - maybe this is a sign that I should pull the tape measures and row counters out of the little front pocket and put them back into the make-up knitting gadgets bag). of course, there’s yarn more or less wrapped around my hand, so flinging my hand out like that can only lead to disaster. I looked down and saw a few live stitches running for their lives, and most of the rest of them hanging on for dear life hoping the needle would be there to hang on to again really soon. (sorry, no pictures, the stitches have been rescued).
after a moment resisting the urge to curse out the bus driver cry, I came to my senses and realized it probably wasn’t nearly as bad as it looked. (and it looked bad - the stitch pattern is all k2 p2, which looks a little crazy when the live stitches are set free from their needle. not to mention the run). so I scooped up the stitches that jumped were yanked off the right needle (I think I managed to keep them in proper k2 p2 order. I’m not so sure I managed to put them on the needle in the right way, but I’ll just knit thru the back loop or whatever when I get back to that point. the goal was stitches safely on the needles). assessed the run. picked up the stitches on the other side of it back onto the left needle. went back to evaluate the run. thankfully, it was only two stitches. dug thru the bag and found a cable needle and put the stitches on it. evaluated some more and was thankful that a) they hadn’t quite made it to the previous section, which meant that b) they were knit stitches and c) I didn’t have to deal with sorting out any twisted rib stitches (you know, k2tog, leave them on the needles, go back and knit the 1st stitch and slide them both off).
on the other hand, I did learn that knitting shadows look really funky. (I wonder what the gal sitting across from me thought of those shadows.)
